BAND TOGETHER FOR GOOD
ABOUT BAND TOGETHER FOR GOOD
Band Together for Good, Inc. (BTFG) is a community based musical ensemble made up of volunteers from all over South Florida. We volunteer our time by providing a lively performance for various charitable events, including the March of Dimes walkers at the March for Babies annual fundraiser in Miami, Florida and the Autism Speaks event in Doral, Florida.
The members of the marching band are very talented volunteers from a number of colleges and high schools around South Florida. Each volunteer musician devotes their time to rehearsals and other preparations to ensure the best possible performance for the walkers at the event. All of the members find the experience exciting and fulfilling, and always return the following year to do it again!
The ensemble was started in 2008 by the Lambda Gamma Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc. based out of Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Fl. FIU was the host institution for the MFB Band and continues to be the host for Band Together for Good. The idea came from Lambda Gamma alumnus Tanya Villa who worked in cooperation with Angelica Fernandez [formerly] from March of Dimes. Originally Ms. Fernandez suggested having the FIU band perform at the March for Babies event. Mrs. Villa saw this as an opportunity to take this a step further, and create a group specifically for the March for Babies. Mrs. Villa then presented the idea to the active brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi. From there, the active chapter decided to help create the ensemble and make it an open ensemble for all student musicians in Miami-Dade.
Each year, the ensemble rehearses on various evenings, starting about two months before the event. Our tunes come from FIU Marching Band arrangements, contributed high school arrangements from represented high schools, and newly arranged pieces from our very own volunteer arrangers.
Some of the main goals of starting the ensemble were to make these charitable events more festive, provide an opportunity for High School musicians to play with college students while earning community service credit hours for their efforts, and to start a tradition of sharing music with the community that will hopefully continue for years to come.
What started as a small ensemble of 30 members in its inaugural year in 2008 has grown to over 100 members every year since. Due to COVID-19, our last performance was in 2019, due to charitable events being canceled and virtual fundraisers replacing them. This year our goal is bring our tradition of music back to the community, and rebuild; all while we continue to provide entertainment at worthwhile community and charitable events, and increase awareness of music in the community.
